Designing your Website to Work for You

Many people do not realize how important the appearance of the company’s website can be for their image and the future of their business.  When you set up a website for your company you will want to make sure that you are doing everything that you can to make sure that your image and the ideals of your company are properly displayed.  Some of the common mistakes that people make when they design their website will be discussed here so that you can work to prevent them and make sure that the site will work for you as efficiently as it should.

One of the first mistakes that people make when setting up their website is that they tend to try and put too much information up at once.  This can cause the page to appear cluttered and disorganized.  When you have potential customers coming to the page this can put them off.  The goal of the internet is to try and get as much information out to the public as you can without overwhelming them.  This can be a tricky proposition, but one of the best things you can do is to provide some basic information with links to more detailed descriptions.  This works out well because you do not clutter up the page unnecessarily, and if people choose, they can learn more about a certain subject without having to look through information that is irrelevant to them.

Another problem that people run into when designing their website is that they tend to load up a lot of graphics.  This can slow the page down and can make it difficult for some internet connections to load.  If people have to wait too long for the page to load they will likely turn away from the page and go elsewhere for their information.  When looking at graphics remember that less is often more.  Also, do not try to use bright letters on a dark background.  This is often difficult for many people to read, and it can detract from the site.  Your best bet is always a clearly legible font with black lettering on a white background.  While it may seem plain to you, it is often a relief for people to not have to worry trying to read a difficult font with a flashing background image distracting them.

This is not to say that you can’t make your site playful and colorful, just remember to not go overboard.  One or two well placed flash graphics can do a lot more to boost your internet traffic than a ton of them overwhelming the page.  If people are coming to your site about information then your job when designing the site is to make sure that it is easily accessible and that they can clearly understand what is on the site.

One way to try and avoid a lot of problems is to hire someone to put your website together for you.  While this may seem like an unnecessary expense, it could work to increase your revenue and could potentially garner you more clients than you originally thought possible.  After all, in today’s modern era the website is your company’s calling card and is often the first contact you have with potential clients.
